Dr. Trey Rick, Coordinator of Academic Operations, Music Business

ACM@UCO welcomes our Coordinator of Academic Operations for Music Business, Dr. Trey Rick, lawyer, educator, and music business veteran.

Mitch BellDr. Trey Rick has been an adjunct faculty member at ACM@UCO since 2010 and has recently joined us in a full time capacity. His courses include Music Industry Studies, Business Studies I & II, New Media & Music, and Artist Development, among others. Topics include music business contracts, music publishing, music business revenue and royalty streams, copyright and other legal aspects of the music industry. He serves as member of the Copyright Action Team assisting with the organization, design, and development of copyright policy concerning the educational use of copyrighted materials (such as texts, images, and audio materials) at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Trey received his law degree from Mississippi College School of Law, and his bachelor of arts degree from Millsaps College. While in law school, Trey worked at Malaco Music Group, "The Last Soul Company," in the copyright and royalties department where he learned about the business of record labels and music publishing. Malaco is the music publisher of classic songs like “Old Time Rock & Roll,” “Mr. Big Stuff,” and “Ring My Bell.” In 2007, he worked on the New Media team at Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) in Nashville, TN under the leadership of Richard Conlon, SVP of Corporate Strategy, Communications & New Media. During the summer of 2008, Trey worked as a legal intern for arts and entertainment attorney, Suzette Toledano, at her entertainment law firm above the House of Blues. He worked as Music Supervisor for the cutting-edge 15-episode MTV series $5 Cover by Craig Brewer (writer and director of Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan) performing music licensing, negotiations, and supervision. MTV New Media released "webisodes" of the series during the winter of 2001, and MTV Network aired the television series during the spring of 2009.

After law school, Trey joined Shrum & Associates, a Nashville-based entertainment law firm, where he researched a variety of music copyright-related issues and analyzed entertainment-related contracts for clients. Also, he founded Third Curve Music & Media Management, a full-service artist management and artist development company that provides artists with a holistic solution to realize their potential across a profusion of music and media platforms.

Trey is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. He spends his nights supporting the local live music scene and producing music in his home recording studio. Trey and his wife, Amanda, live in Yukon, OK with their pom-chi, Fiona Apple.

When asked why he left Nashville (Music City USA) for ACM@UCO in Oklahoma City, he said
I was excited about Scott Booker's vision for ACM@UCO and Oklahoma. He wears his love for artists and musicians on his sleeve; he genuinely wants to help them live their dreams. I feel exactly the same way. Teaching music business courses at ACM@UCO allows me to prepare future recording artists, songwriters, label owners, and music business professionals with the knowledge to compete in the evolving music industry. ACM@UCO provides a very unique opportunity for its students. Everyday, when I arrive at ACM@UCO, I can barely believe that I’m lucky enough to be a part of this amazing place.
